Why Affinity

What we believe

Doing Well and Doing Good.

Children's reading room at the Rochester Public Library, Rochester, NH

We founded our company on the belief that doing well and doing good are not mutually exclusive ideas.

A company can earn its keep and leave its customers, its industry, and the world better for the work.

Its customers: every building we touch runs on less, costs less, and is a better place to be.

Its industry: we advocate for the standards, programs, and incentives that move lighting and energy efficiency forward.

The world: less energy drawn from the grid, and a smaller carbon footprint for every community we serve.

That is our bedrock. Everything at Affinity is built on it.

Our story

From the ground up.

An Affinity employee reviewing paperwork with two veteran assemblers at a workbench, Dover, NH

2012 · The first brick, laid at a dining room table in Portsmouth, in the incubation stages of the modern LED lighting era, when it was a race for the socket: incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes giving way to the early generations of LED. We set out to do more: world-class lighting, made in New England again. A conviction the industry did not share. By 2014 it had a home in Dover’s Washington Street Mills, where the region has made things since the 1820s.

The whole chain: product, manufacturing, installation, service. We built every link ourselves, so there is no seam and no one to point at.

The bigger job: lighting is everywhere. So lighting became the way to manage everything. Communities carry the cost and the responsibility of the equipment their daily lives run on. Plug loads, heating and cooling, emergency lights: all of it, through the lights.

Made real: the managed building, for your library, your school, your DPW garage. It used to be real only for new construction. Relieving communities of that burden is the work.

Doing well is the energy saved and the light quality in every building we touch. Doing good is the smaller carbon footprint and the better human experience in every school, town hall, and workplace. Profit and purpose, together. In 2019, Clean Energy NH named Affinity its Clean Tech Business of the Year.
